RCIA -- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults are prepared to enter the Roman Catholic Church. RCIA is directed by a team of lay persons, using as the basis for catechesis, Sacred Scripture and Catholic tradition. Meetings consist of lectures, discussions, and meditative reflection all aimed at building a foundation of faith, prayer and Christian living. Each person is accompanied on their journey of faith by a sponsor who represents the parish community. The RCIA is open to all who have never been baptized, those baptized in other faith denominations and those who have been baptized Catholic and have never had any instruction, who are seeking a life in Christ.

Religious Education of Children

The Religious Education Program provides religious instruction for public school children and coordinates preparation for Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation for all parish elementary school children. The staff assists teachers and catechists in planning student liturgies. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Baptismal Preparation

The Baptismal Preparation Ministry welcomes parents and families of newborns into the parish community and assists them in preparing for the Sacrament of Baptism by acquainting them with the structure and meaning of the rite, and help to revitalize the faith of parents as primary educators of their children. Parents are required to attend a special class before the Baptism of their first child.

Arrangements for the reception of this Sacrament should be made in advance at the Parish Office, 708-485-2900. The Sacrament is celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month at 2:30 p.m. Spanish baptisms are celebrated at the 12:30 p.m. Spanish Mass.

Marriage Preparation

The Parish Marriage Preparation Program is conducted by married couples, trained through the Office of Family Ministries of the Archdiocese of Chicago, who meet in their homes with engaged couples to share insights and wisdom of being married and staying married. It provides a closer parish contact for the engaged couples, and offers the married couples a ministry which enriches their own marriage relationship.

This is the Sacrament by which the Church joyfully joins a couple in celebrating the gift of love. The couple is asked to contact the priest or deacon at least four months in advance. To prepare for their new life together, they must participate in a marriage preparation program.

Evangelization Team

St. Barbara's Evangelization Team is the "spark plug" of our parish. Our goal is to create a welcoming atmosphere for our church community and to reach out and bring Christ to those within our parish, those who have stopped coming to church and those who are seeking to know Christ. The E-Team has organized the annual parish picnic and potluck meals, hosted adult education programs and book discussions, organized Advent and Lenten food drives and created a Hospitality Committee. We’ve also coordinated the Catholics Come Home efforts,  organized a variety of programs to reach out to new, current and former parishioners and coordinated an overnight prayer vigil for Pentecost to just name a few things.

School on Wheels   A program that offers learning English or Spanish with your own tutor; free tutoring one hour a week. Clases are held in the school building on Tuesdays.
