July 4th Parade

Join fellow St. Barbara parishioners in the Brookfield 4th of July parade this year.  The Independence Day Celebration will be held on the 4th of July starting with a parade at 10am and our Knights of Columbus will have a tent at Kiwanis Park for gathering after the parade. We are again going to have a float with the replica of our first church and would like to have many parishioners walking or biking with us to hand out flyers and candy as in the past.  Sign your name on the list on the Welcome Table and stay tuned for information in the bulletin about the staging area for our group.

Feed My Starving Children

St. Barbara’s Missionary Spirit Team is planning our next service opportunity for Saturday, June 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.  at Feed My Starving Children’s Aurora location.  We will pack individual meals, called MannaPacks, which are designed to save the lives of severely malnourished and starving children.  The nutritious ingredients also improve the health, growth and physical well-being of children who are no longer in immediate danger of starvation.  The MannaPacks are shipped around the world to areas where children are most in need.  Each pack can be boiled with water and will provide six meals.  Go to fmsc.org for more information about the incredible work they do.
This service project is open to 20 volunteers from St. Barbara.  Children as young as 5 years old are welcome.  Children who are under 18 years of age will need a permission slip if they are not attending with an adult family member.  People putting the MannaPacks together will be standing, but there are projects available for people who may need to sit.  There is only room for 20 volunteers, so please contact us to reserve your spot – missionaryspirit@st.barbarabrookfield.org. Meet at St. Barbara parking lot at 8:00 am to carpool and return about 11:45 a.m.

Resource Room - Spring Arrivals!

We have in stock gift items for children receiving First Communion—Spanish and English boxed sets, crucifixes, rosaries, wooden prayer cubes and children’s mass booklets.  We also have items for those being confirmed.  If you have last minute shopping to do, check us out.  We are open after all weekend masses and are located in the rear of church.

Your help is needed for the Parish blood drive

St. Barbara's is hosting a community blood drive on Sunday, July 16th in the Parish Center from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Please consider giving an hour of your time to donate blood to someone in need...

* Car accident victims can require red blood cell transfusions of 50 pints or more.

* Severe burn victims require approximately 20 units of plasma.

* Children being treated for cancer, premature infants and children having heart surgery need blood from donors of all types.

* Anemic patients need blood transfusions to increase their iron levels.

* Some patients with complications from severe sickle cell disease, an inherited disease that affects more than 80,000 people in the United States, receive blood transfusions every month – up to four units at a time.

Are  you able to help someone in need?  For more information please contact LifeSource Blood Services at 1-877-LIFESOURCE or www.lifesource.org.  To make an appointment contact Noel at 708-485-5935 or nthornton@ameritech.net.

Think Textile Recycling

St. Barbara's Missionary Spirit Team has been partnering with USAgain for the past year to divert textile waste from landfills.  Maybe you've been doing some spring cleaning and have a bag of old clothes or towels that you are not going to use again.  Instead of becoming trash, these items are reworn, reused and recycled both here in the US and abroad. Reusable clothes are wholesaled and retailed at affordable prices. Non-reusable clothes are recycled into insulation, wiping rags, or are broken down to reclaim fiber.  Bring your unwanted clothing, shoes or household linens (towels, sheets, blankets, curtains, etc.) in a tied plastic bag and deposit them in the green and white bins in the church parking lot anytime.  Learn more about textile recycling at www.usagain.com.  Contact missionaryspirit@stbarbarabrookfield.org.

What is Missionary Spirit?

In 2013 our Missionary Spirit Team grew out the Parish Transformation process.  We were reminded that by virtue of our Baptism and Confirmation we are all called to be missionaries, whether that be where we live, where we worship or where we work.  We are called to reach out, as Jesus did, to help the poor, the sick and the sinner.

The Missionary Spirit Team works to find service opportunities for our parishioners.  Our goal is to give all parishioners an opportunity every month to serve someone in need.  We look for opportunities to serve those in our parish, our local community and beyond.  We have helped the hungry and the ill; our parish and our environment; children and the elderly.

St. Barbara's Missionary Spirit Team is planning some great service opportunities for 2017!  We hope there is something on the calendar that catches your attention and gets you thinking about how you can help.  More details will be posted in the bulletin as each event approaches. If you'd like to get an e-mail update about service projects (this is a great idea for families with Confirmation candidates!), contact us at missionaryspirit@stbarbarabrookfield.org.

St. Barbara's Rosary Makers.....

.....are 16 years old in January.  We have made over 29,000 corded rosaries since we began January 2001.  Irene, Therese, Estelle, Marge, Stacy, Dora, Nancy, Joan, Carol, Rose, Elma and Jenny are our Rosary Makers.  We meet one morning a month to hand over the rosaries that we have made during the past month, and then pick up the supplies that we need for the next month.  Our finished rosaries are mostly sent to a contact lady in Florida who distributes them to missionaries who come to her from Central and South America.  New Rosary Makers are always welcome. We are supported by the CCW.
